Eurojackpot FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the European Eurojackpot lottery

What is the Eurojackpot lottery?

Eurojackpot is a lottery played in 19 European countries, launched in March 2012. Five main numbers and two additional numbers — called EuroNumbers — are drawn. To win the jackpot, you must match all the numbers drawn, but there are also eleven secondary prize tiers.

Where and at what time are the Eurojackpot draws held?

Draws are held using two machines, one for the main numbers and the other for the EuroNumbers. A fun fact: the machine used to draw the main numbers is called Venus.

What are the minimum and maximum costs of a Eurojackpot entry?

One Eurojackpot ticket costs €2 and consists of one combination of 5 main numbers and 2 EuroNumbers. The maximum entry is a full system ticket of 32,767 combinations.

What is the minimum age to play Eurojackpot?

You must be at least 18 years old to buy a ticket and take part.

When does ticket sales close?

On draw days, ticket sales open at 06:00 and close at 19:00; on non-draw days, sales close at 23:50.

How is the total Eurojackpot prize fund calculated and distributed?

Fifty per cent of all ticket revenue goes into the total prize fund, while a substantial portion of the remaining 50 per cent goes to national taxes. The prize fund for each tier is then calculated according to the following percentages:

  • 36.00% to the jackpot (first prize tier)
  • 8.6% to the second tier
  • 4.85% to the third tier
  • 0.8% to the fourth tier
  • 1% to the fifth tier
  • 1.1% to the sixth tier
  • 0.8% to the seventh tier
  • 2.55% to the eighth tier
  • 2.85% to the ninth tier
  • 5.40% to the tenth tier
  • 6.75% to the eleventh tier
  • 20.3% to the twelfth tier

The prize fund for each tier is shared equally among all winners in that tier. If there are no winners in any tier, that tier’s prize fund rolls over to the same tier in the next draw. The remaining 9% is deposited into a “booster fund”, a reserve used to ensure the jackpot reaches its guaranteed minimum of €10 million in the draw following a jackpot win. It’s not possible to calculate exact prize amounts in advance because they are determined after the draw.

How do you win at Eurojackpot?

There are several ways to win. To win the jackpot — the first prize tier — you must match all five main numbers and both EuroNumbers. However, in addition to the jackpot, there are 11 secondary prizes that can be won starting from matching 2 main numbers and 1 EuroNumber.

How do you claim an Italian Eurojackpot prize?

To claim a prize up to €1,000, you only need to present the original, undamaged winning receipt. For prizes over €1,000, you must also show valid ID, and payment is made only by non-transferable cheque or bank transfer.

The method of claiming depends on the amount won:

  • For prizes up to €520, you can claim at any Sisal retailer.
  • For prizes up to €5,200, you can claim at the retailer where you played, at authorised payment points, or at Sisal offices.
  • For prizes over €5,200, you can claim at authorised payment points and at Sisal offices in Milan and Rome.
  • For prizes over €52,000, claims can only be made at the Prize Payment section of Sisal offices in Milan and Rome.

Is there a time limit for claiming Eurojackpot winnings?

Yes. In Italy, players must claim your prize within 90 calendar days from the day after the results are published in the Official Bulletin. After 60 days, however, you can only claim at the Sisal offices in Milan and Rome. After the full 90 days, the right to claim expires. The only exception is for prizes over €10 million: in this case, the ticket holder has three years to request payment.

What are the odds of winning Eurojackpot?

If you play a single combination, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 139,838,160. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 32.

Does this European lottery have a guaranteed minimum jackpot?

Yes. The guaranteed minimum jackpot is €10 million. This means that whenever the jackpot is won, the next draw starts again at this value.

Is there a maximum number of rollovers, or a maximum jackpot amount?

If not won, the jackpot rolls over to the next draw. Originally, the jackpot could not roll over more than 12 times; if it still wasn’t won, the prize was redistributed to the highest tier with at least one winner.

Since 1 February 2013, this rule has been removed and there is no longer any limit on the number of rollovers. However, the jackpot still has a maximum value of €120 million. If it reaches this amount, any further funds normally allocated to the jackpot are instead added to the second prize tier.

What is the highest win in Eurojackpot history?

The largest prize ever awarded is €120 million, the jackpot cap. The first person to win this amount was a Danish player in July 2022, and it has been won on many subsequent occasions too.
