Eurojackpot History

Since its debut in 2012, the Eurojackpot lottery has undergone various changes and has awarded some truly memorable prizes.

The table below lists, in chronological order, the most important dates and events in the history of Eurojackpot — the milestones that have helped make it one of Europe’s biggest and most popular lotteries.

March 2005 Various European operators begin considering the idea of another European lottery after the success of EuroMillions, launched the previous year.
June 2011 An agreement for the debut of Eurojackpot is formally reached in Helsinki.
23 March 2012 The first draw takes place, with seven participating countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Slovenia.
11 May 2012 The first jackpot win, in Germany: €19.5 million.
30 June 2012 Spain becomes the eighth country to join Eurojackpot.
10 August 2012 A €27.5 million jackpot is awarded to the “5+1” winner after rolling over 12 consecutive times (the maximum rollover allowed at that time).
26 October 2012 First jackpot win in Denmark, and the first not to take place in Germany: €21.3 million.
25 January 2013 First jackpot win in Finland and a new record: €29.5 million.
1 February 2013 Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Croatia, Latvia, and Lithuania join (making 14 participating countries). The previous 12-rollover limit is removed and replaced with a €90 million jackpot cap.
12 April 2013 New jackpot record: €46 million won in Germany.
3 May 2013 First jackpot win in Norway: €13.4 million won by Yngvar Borgerson, who invests it in his local football club.
16 August 2013 First jackpot win in Italy: €15 million.
6 December 2013 First jackpot win in Slovenia: €21 million.
10 January 2014 First jackpot win in Croatia: €17.2 million.
4 April 2014 New jackpot record: €57.2 million won in Finland.
12 September 2014 New jackpot record: €61.2 million won in Finland.
10 October 2014 Hungary and the Czech Republic join (now 16 countries). The number of Euro Numbers increases from 8 to 10.
8 May 2015 The jackpot reaches €90 million for the first time but is not won.
15 May 2015 New jackpot record: €90 million won in the Czech Republic.
9 October 2015 Slovakia joins (now 17 countries). First jackpot win in Spain: €31.5 million.
29 July 2016 The second-highest jackpot ever is won in Germany: €84.8 million, awarded to a player from Hesse.
14 October 2016 A €90 million jackpot is won in Baden-Württemberg (Black Forest). This is the highest jackpot ever won in Germany.
6 January 2017 A €90 million jackpot is shared by three players in Germany, one in Denmark and one in the Netherlands.
9 September 2017 Poland joins (now 18 countries).
25 March 2022 Eurojackpot rules change: a Tuesday draw is introduced, the jackpot cap increases from €90 million to €120 million, and the two Euro Numbers are now drawn from 12 balls instead of 10.
22 July 2022 A Danish player becomes the first to win the new maximum jackpot of €120 million.
8 March 2024 Greece joins (now 19 countries).
